The Greencastle boys' golf team lost its first meet of the season, getting outscored by Plainfield 153-161 at a three-team meet at Windy Hill on Thursday. Cloverdale finished the nine-hole event with a 198.

GHS junior Luke Brotherton's 34 was the best score of the day, but it wasn't enough to secure a win for the host Tiger Cubs.

"Luke had a very solid round," GHS coach Steve Paquin said. "The rest of the team struggle with bad holes that contributed to our first loss of the season."

Alec Davis (41), Tanner Dean (42), Jake Buis (44) and Wataru Otaki (47) also carded for the Tiger Cubs.

Cloverdale's best scorer was Rylan Mattocks, who shot a 46. Freddie Fisler followed close behind with a 47.

"Freddie played a really solid round," Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. "Rylan had a rough start and finished well."

Other Cloverdale scorers were Aaron Whitlock (48), Chase Snyder (57) and Devin Bassett (58).

"Aaron had a tough start, found a groove for a little while and then went away," Wokoun said. "Chase and Devin just couldn't stay away from trouble.

"I continue to see flashes of good play, but we have to find a way to even out rough patches and avoid bad situations."

Greencastle was hosting its third match in the past four nights and the weather conditions continued to make things difficult.

"We did not handle the windy conditions and wet course (well enough) to compete against a solid Plainfield team," Paquin said. "We tend to get off to poor starts and cannot pull it back together.

"As the season goes along we will have to improve in this area or we will be just an average team."

Greencastle hosts the Tiger Cub Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Cloverdale (3-4) plays in the Brownsburg Invitational at West Chase on Saturday.
