GHS golfers act as selfish hosts, win own invitational

Monday, April 29, 2013

The Greencastle boys' golf team stayed on track on Saturday, winning the Tiger Cub Invitational in a route.

GHS shot a 317, significantly lower than second-place Southmont. South Vermillion, West Vigo and Rockville rounded out the field.

Tanner Dean was once again the medalist, finishing with a four-over 76 the 18-hole event at Windy Hill.

"Tanner Dean had an outstanding tournament leading the Tiger Cubs to a victory in their invitational," GHS coach Steve Paquin said. "The course played long and the greens were very fast making low scoring difficult."

Luke Brotherton and Alec Davis each shot a 78 for the Tiger Cubs. Jake Buis, 85, Wataru Otaki, 87, and Carl Basile, 97, rounded out the field. Taylor Monts of Southmont had the best score of a non-Greencastle player with 82.

"Luke and Alec had good scores in the cool, breezy conditions," Paquin said. "We still need to work on shot-making in difficult weather conditions and improve greens in regulation, chipping and putting."

Davis' would have been even better were it not for a mental error.

"Alec had to count four penalty strokes as he mistakenly had 15 clubs in his bag," Paquin said. "The limit is 14. He called the penalty on himself after the second hole after discovering he had one too many clubs."

The Tiger Cubs will look to continue their winning ways on Monday when they host Danville at Windy Hill at 4:30 p.m.

  • Well this is the first instance in which tanner dean was the medalist, and 76 is 6 over par at windy hill, solid score, but maybe make sure your article is correct next time.
