ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam softball team met its match Tuesday when the shorthanded Cougars lost to Cascade 11-1 in five innings.

NPHS (8-6, 4-3) was without starting pitcher Sabrina Surber, who played first base to rest, and regular second baseman Lauren Johnston, who missed the game with an illness.

The shaken-up defense left the Cougars a step behind for most of the night.

Junior Kayla Fish got the start for NPHS. She threw a complete game and struck out four and allowing 15 hits.

Kate Breedlove, a junior, got the win for Cascade.

Junior Bailey Ault had two hits for the Cougars and freshman Sierra Spencer, called up to serve as the designated player in place of Johnston, reached base twice and scored the Cougars only run.

Jazzmin Laffin also got a start, playing both right and centerfield.

Cascade junior Morgan Burch was 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles.

The Cougars lost at Cascade on Monday 3-0.

Surber started that game and struck out eight in seven innings of work. She also doubled but was left stranded in the sixth inning.

The Cougars will have a chance to move into a tie for second place in the West Central Conference on Wednesday when they travel to South Putnam. The Eagles have two conference losses, both to Cascade, and the Cougars have three, including one to SPHS.

The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
