Greencastle mounted comebacks in the sixth and seventh innings against Monrovia on Tuesday, but it fell short in a 9-7 loss in a West Central Conference baseball game on the Tiger Cubs' field.

Nick Gilliam's long drive to left field with one run in and Brandon Gierke on second in the seventh inning was caught by Monrovia's Brandon Roy, who stretched out with his glove over his head, to end the game.

"I have to give them credit, they didn't give up when they got down," Greencastle coach Troy Remsburg said.

Greencastle (2-8, 1-5 WCC) opened up a 4-0 lead in the first inning on consecutive singles by Tanner Nicholson, Holden King and Cole Pohlar, followed by three straight errors by the Bulldogs (5-7, 3-3 WCC).

Monrovia tied it with four runs in the second off Tiger Cubs' starter Brett Gierke. Greencastle committed two errors and three of the four runs were unearned.

Gierke went four innings, allowing one earned run. He struck out four and walked one.

"I thought Brett did pretty good," Remsburg said. "I thought he ran out of gas."

Nicholson relieved Gierke in the fifth and Monrovia scored two on two hits, a RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI ground out to take a 6-4 lead.

The Tiger Cubs scored two runs in the sixth. Alex Pettit's double to right drove in Gilliam and Brant Mangrum drove in Pettit with an infield single.

Monrovia took a 9-6 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh.

Down to their last out, the Tiger Cubs scored one run on Landon Miller's single and Brandon Gierke's RBI double. Gilliam's blast to left would have scored a run and put him in scoring position, but Roy's catch ended it.

Greencastle didn't commit an error in a 10-0 win at Monrovia on Monday and had four in defeat Tuesday.

"You can't make errors and win the game," Remsburg said. "That's the difference between last night (Monday) and tonight."

  • thats funny gierke "ran out of gas." 3 up 3 down in the first. bunch of errors in the second. 3 up 3 down in the 3rd. 4 up 3 down in the 4th. dont see anything showing "out of gas." one walk thru 4 innings and out of gas? i think we musta been watching a different game. bc it was way to early to pull somebody that was still throwing heat and strikes. guess this is why i am watching from the side lines.
