The South Putnam softball team hosted a rescheduled game against North Putnam on Wednesday. The Eagles won 7-1.

The win gave the Eagles (11-4, 6-2 WCC) control of second place in the West Central Conference. North Putnam (8-7, 4-4 WCC) has doubled its win-total from last year and has two games against Monrovia next week to clinch third-place.

Senior Jenna Jones went 2-for-3 for the Eagles with a walk and two runs scored, including the first of the game.

With two outs in the first inning she walked, then advanced to third when junior Kenzie Trisler doubled and scored on a groundball by freshman Katie Hewitt.

Sophomore Ashlee Gibson started for the Eagles. Gibson threw a complete game, struck out nine and allowed just four hits, none until the fifth inning.

The Eagles added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Senior Kelsey Whitaker walked to start then inning, a single and an error loaded the bases.

Hewitt's sacrifice fly scored one and Gibson knocked in two more.

NPHS got on the scoreboard for the first time in the fifth inning. Trailing 6-0, junior Madi Asbell hit a one-out single to become just the fourth baserunner of the game.

Asbell advanced to second on a pass ball, then scored on an error.

The Cougars threatened again in the sixth and seventh innings, loading the bases in the final frame, but failed to get a run across.

Sophomore Sabrina Surber started for North Putnam. She struck out four in six innings.

Trisler continued her solid play. She was 3-for-3 with two doubles and is now hitting .653 this season. Varvel was 1-for-3 with two runs.
