Greencastle beats North Putnam and field in four-team golf match

The Greencastle boys' golf team has a big home-course advantage at challenge Windy Hill, but the team also has a lot of talent. Both came through on Wednesday when the Tiger Cubs shot a 149 to beat Crawfordsville (177), North Putnam (184) and Southmont (197).

Junior Luke Brotherton used his feel for the course to stay out of trouble and shot a one-under 34 for the best score of the evening.

The Tiger Cubs had four golfers outscore anyone from any other team.

"(We had) very consistent scoring from all six Tiger Cubs," GHS coach Steve Paquin said. "Luke had eight pars and one birdie; Alec (Davis) had eight pars and a bogey; Tanner (Dean) had five pars and four bogies; and Jake (Buis) had five bogies and four pars."

Senior Wataru Otaki shot a 42 and sophomore Carl Basile shot a 46 for GHS.

North Putnam's medalist was Danny Smith, who finished at nine-over 44. Austin Judy and Jon Willard each had a 46, Bennett Hazelgrove and Jake Holtze each had a 48 and Jake Smith had a 49.

"If we continue this type of consistency," Paquin said, "we will have an excellent end to an already good season. We still need to work on chipping and putting as these are the two areas where lower scoring will come from. Our ball striking can still stand some improvement."

Greencastle has failed to win just one meet in the past two seasons.

The Tiger Cubs continue a busy week on Thursday when they travel to Deer Creek to take on WCC opponents Cascade and Monrovia at 4:30 p.m.

NPHS is next scheduled for a match at Danville on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
