Fillmore stormwater project remains on track

FILLMORE -- Designs are being finalized for Fillmore's storm sewer project, and visible signs of progress should be coming later this summer.

Lori Young of Curry & Associates engineering updated the Fillmore Town Council on the project at its Thursday meeting.

Young plans to meet with the council at some point in the coming week to review the plans and get started on the next phase of the project.

In about two weeks, the town should be able to set a bid date for the project for sometime in the second half of June.

Once bids are opened, Young said the town could expect construction to begin either in late July or August.

The project will install storm sewers along Main Street from Cemetery Road on the north to just south of Fillmore Elementary School. The street will be repaved over the length of the project.

The more than $700,000 project is funded by a grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.

In other business, the Fillmore council fielded complaints on a number of issues.

Councilman Curt Leonard brought up a house that was burned in a recent controlled burn. He said the house smoldered for five days, making it impossible to even open windows within two blocks.

The council will contact town attorney Mary Russell to see if anything can be done about such burns through the nuisance ordinance or other council action.

A couple of residents also discussed gurgling sounds coming from their sanitary sewers during recent heavy rains. It is unclear if the sounds are due to infiltration in the sewers or some other problem.

Complaints were also made about motorists speeding on Westwood Road and on Main Street in the school zone. Town Marshal Darrel Bunten said he will try to focus on those areas.
