Cloverdale clinches win against Clay City

Devin Bassett

BRAZIL -- The Cloverdale boys' golf team picked up a win at Clay City on Tuesday, beating the Eels 165-186.

"We have been waiting for this type of night all season," Cloverdale coach Doug Wokoun said. "We all realize our potential, but we have just been missing a few things here and there. Our course management is getting better and our understanding of how we can be most successful is starting to come together."

Freddy Fislar was the low-scorer for the Clovers with a 40, but he was followed closely by Devin Bassett's 41, Aaron Whitlock's and Rylan Mattocks' 42 and Chase Snyder's 44.

"Freddy had one bad hole but otherwise played very well. He is starting to play with the consistency we thought he would have. He is making good strides to put all the pieces together."

Bassett's round was a career-best.

"Devin had a super round," Wokoun said. "He is a capable young man, but has struggled with consistency. But I think he is starting to convince himself, and that self-confidence is critical.

"Aaron and Rylan had solid rounds, although they had to battle through some difficulties. They are both starting to get their confidence."

Cloverdale (6-5) hosts the Putnam County Tournament at Clover Meadows on Thursday.

GHS golfers roll past Northview Knights

Luke Brotherton

The Greencastle boys' golf team started another busy week with a win against Northview on Monday 148-171.

Tiger Cubs' junior Luke Brotherton tied a school record by shooting a four-under 31.

"Luke did the three most important elements for low scoring," GHS coach Steve Paquin said. "He hit fairways, greens in regulation and he putted well."

Greencastle had several other low-scorers, beginning with Alec Davis, who shot a 36. Jake Buis shot a 40, Tanner Dean a 41, Wataru Otaki, Carl Basile 55 and Jonah Stevens a 59.

Northview's low-scorer scored a 41.

"It was another solid round for Alec," Paquin said. "Our other players continue to struggle to get scores under 40, but they are continuing to shoot near their averages.

"They will have a breakout round where they all put it together for nine or 18 holes; that could come any time."

Greencastle plays again at the county tournament on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., and at the West Central Conference tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m.

The Putnam County Tournament is at Clover Meadows.

The WCC meet is held at Deer Creek Golf Club.

  • Luke Brotherton shot a GHS school record 31, which is saying a lot when you consider all the good golfers that have played over the years. Congrats Luke!
