International Wood Collectors Society to host workshop at Putnam County Fairgrounds

Thursday, May 9, 2013

The International Wood Collectors Society will meet at the Putnam County Fairgrounds on Saturday at 8 a.m. Members of The International Wood Collectors Society will also be conducting demonstrations for area 4-H members beginning at 9 a.m.

Founded in 1947, the International Wood Collectors Society is a non-profit society devoted to distributing information on collecting wood, correctly identifying and naming wood specimens and using wood in creative crafts.

Demonstrations will include wood finishing techniques, wood turning of pens and pencils, carving of golf balls, scroll sawing techniques and wood burning art.

Area 4-H members who are enrolled in a wood working project are asked to bring their project plans and will be able to get free lumber for their project.

The meeting will offer complimentary coffee and donuts. There will also be an auction beginning at 1 p.m. that will include wood crafted items and wood, donated by club members.

A $5 fee will be charged for a ticket to bid at the auction. Door prizes will be awarded as part of the auction. Food will be available on site to purchase from 4-H clubs.

Participants do not have to be a member of the Wood Collectors Society to participate in the day's activities. The public is invited to attend.

Information on the IWCS can be found at www.woodcollectors.org.
