Tiger Cubs tennis takes it to Patriots
The Greencastle girls' tennis team continues to capitalize on its promising start. The Tiger Cubs beat the visiting Owen Valley Patriots on Wednesday 4-1.
GHS picked up wins at No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles, No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles.
"We've got a pretty strong team this year," senior Haylie Romer said. "This is a pretty good time for us to be competitive."
Romer won at one-singles, defeating Patriots junior Kayla Samick 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).
"I played this girl last year; it was a very similar match," Romer said. "I think the most important part of this match was keeping my head in the game ... and trying not to overcompensate."
Romer's counter-punching style worked well in the first set against Samick, but Romer started pressing in the second set.
She attacked more than normal, apparently trying to end the match quickly, which led to uncharacteristic errors, forcing her to close out the match in a tie-breaker.
Senior Kayla Chadd had no such trouble at three-singles. Chadd beat senior Rachel Truax 6-0, 6-1.
Junior Melody White and senior Bailey Brewer won in straight sets at one-doubles, beating Hannah Corder and Lexi Heckus 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
Senior Sabrina Arnold and freshman Corrie Romer quickly closed out their match at two-doubles 6-0, 6-0 against Tara Langley and Sarah Gilstrap.
Harriet Watson, GHS's two-singles player, lost a close match to Tori Byerly 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
The Tiger Cubs will attempt to keep their momentum going on Thursday when they host Danville at 4:30 p.m.
