Sectional draws set for local softball teams

Friday, May 10, 2013

On Thursday the Indiana High School Athletic Association announced draws for the 2013 postseason softball tournament, set to begin Monday, May 20.

Each of the Putnam County teams begins its tournament on a different night, except for a first-round game between two.

The two-time defending state champion Eagles of South Putnam are matched up with Cloverdale in the opening round on Tuesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. The Eagles and Clovers play in Sectional 44, which is hosted at Cascade High School.

South Putnam swept the season series with Cloverdale, 2-0, and the two teams also face each other in the opening round of the Putnam County Tournament, which is scheduled Saturday at Greencastle.

SPHS (14-4, 8-2) won its second consecutive state championship last season and currently has a seven-game winning streak. The Eagles are led by a group of highly successful seniors, though they mix in several underclassmen as well.

Sophomore Ashlee Gibson has pitched the majority of the innings for South Putnam and has a 1.38 ERA, while senior third baseman Jenna Jones is the team's leading hitter.

Jones leads the Eagles in home runs with 7 and batting average at .625.

CHS (3-9, 0-7) is led by a pair of seniors. Katt Raisor has pitched nearly every inning for the Clovers this year and third baseman Bradanne Toney leads the team at the plate.

Greencastle opens its postseason against Brown County on Monday, May 20. The Tiger Cubs play in the Edgewood sectional and play in game two, which should begin at about 6:30 p.m.

GHS (5-12, 0-8) is a young group that has improved as the season has gone along. Freshman Maddie Fauvergue has been the Tiger Cubs' most active pitcher. She is 4-7 with a 4.49 ERA.

The team's lone senior, left fielder Ellen Gobert, is second on the team in hitting behind freshman catcher Kenlee Johnson (.372).

Greencastle and Brown County have not faced each other this year.

North Putnam is the only local team with a first-round bye. The Cougars will open their postseason on Wednesday, May 22 at 5 p.m. at Crawfordsville against the winner of the opening game between Frankfort and Crawfordsville.

NPHS (9-8, 4-5) has already more than doubled its win total from last season and looks to keep the momentum going into the postseason.

The Cougars are led by sophomore pitcher Sabrina Surber, who has 144 strikeouts in 82 innings. Surber is also their leading hitter with a batting average of .466 and two home runs.

NPHS beat Crawfordsville 6-1 on April 20. Frankfort was not on its schedule.

The remaining teams in the South Putnam/Cloverdale sectional are Cascade, Covenant Christian and Speedway.

Greencastle's sectional also includes Edgewood, West Vigo and Owen Valley and South Vermillion.

North Putnam is in the same sectional as North Montgomery, South Montgomery, Western Boone and Lebanon.
