CLOVERDALE -- Through a brief break in the weather, the Greencastle boys' golf team managed to tear open a window big enough to finish the nine-hole Putnam County Tournament in first place on Thursday.

Alec Davis

The Tiger Cubs, led by junior Alec Davis' even-par 36, finished with a team score of 162. Cloverdale finished second with 173, followed by North Putnam's 179 and South Putnam's 189.

Davis said winning medalist honors at the county tournament was a tremendous accomplishment.

"It's a good feeling," he said. "I hit the ball really well. I hit all nine greens, but with the rain the greens were really slow and inconsistent. ... (At Clover Meadows) you just have to really place your shots well, and that's what I did."

Davis was joined on the 2013 All-County team by fellow Tiger Cubs Luke Brotherton (39) and Tanner Dean (43).

The remaining All-County members were Rylan Mattocks (40) and Freddy Fislar (43) from Cloverdale, Jake Smith (43) from North Putnam and Derek Chestnut (40) from South Putnam.

Greencastle's other participants were Jake Buis and Carl Basile, who both shot a 44.

"This is a really fun team," Davis said. "We're young and we're only going to graduate one senior."

Also competing for second-place Clover-dale were Aaron Whitlock (45), Chase Snyder (45) and Devin Bassett (53).

Freddy Fislar

The Cougars sent Austin Judy (45), Mason Asher (45), Jon Willard (46) and Danny Smith (47).

South Putnam's roster was Jimmy Rutter (46), Justin Berry (50), Austin Query (53) and Chad Menke (57).

The tournament started after an hour-long delay due to rain, and another downpour began soon after the last golfers reached the clubhouse following their round.

Jake Smith

Due to the water on the course, golfers were able to pick up, clean and replace their balls throughout the course.

The four teams are scheduled to compete again on Saturday at the 2013 West Central Conference Tournament at Deer Creek Golf Course in Monrovia.

Tee-time is scheduled for 11 a.m.

Luke Brotherton

"I've got high hopes for all of my teammates," Davis said. "There's no where to go but up."
