Tiger Cubs win girls' WCC track and field championship
The Greencastle girls' track and field team won the 2013 West Central Conference meet on Friday, finishing with a dominant 126 points to beat out second-place Cloverdale's 105.
Monrovia (99), South Putnam (68), North Putnam (56) and Cascade (36) rounded out the field.
The Tiger Cubs took first place in five events, including two relays, to help pile up their points.
Freshman Kat King swept the sprints, winning both the 100- and 200-meter, and senior Colleen Weatherford cruised to middle-distance wins in the 400 and 800.
The Tiger Cubs team of Bailey Lausee, Erica Hoagland, Carissa Johnson and King won the 4x100 relay, finishing at 53.95 seconds, and their 4x800 team of Kayla Cash, Brittany Love, Alex Stoffregen and Weatherford came from behind for a win at 10:13.51.
Weatherford, King and both relays all repeated from wins at Tuesday's Putnam County meet.
Cash, who won the 1600 on Tuesday, finished second in the event on Friday to Monrovia's Kenna Hunter.
South Putnam sophomore Ariel Higgins won two events for her school. Higgins swept the 100- and 300-meter hurdles.
Sophomore Deborah Cheatham also won for the Eagles, besting the high jump field by clearing 4-11.
North Putnam took home a pair of wins. Senior Samantha Lucas put her shot 37-feet, 4-inches to edge out Greencastle sophomore Jessica Lenihan's 37-2 1/2.
Audrey Healey won the long jump, cruising to a distance of 15-10. Healey and Lucas both won the county championship as well.
Sophomore Kayla Clodfelter was second in the pole vault.
Much of the evening was raced under a cloud of rainfall, which delayed the meet briefly and caused standing water to effect the competition.
Cloverdale finished in second place on Friday, despite winning just two events. The squad had numerous top-three finishes to help close the gap on Greencastle.
The Clovers got wins from senior Claudia Monnett in the 3200-meter run (12:22.42) and sophomore Laura Worthington, who won the discus with a toss of 89-6 1/2.
The four teams will compete again at Sectionals on Tuesday at South Putnam High School.
