City Police

A driverless car was involved in an unusual accident in Greencastle's South End Wednesday evening, City Police reported.

Carolyn Strahl told Officer Nick Eastham that she parked her 2004 Chevrolet Impala in the driveway of her home at 405 E. Berry St. and was heading inside.

As Strahl was going in the front door, she said she heard a crash and turned around to see that the car had "somehow come out of park" and rolled down the driveway and across Berry Street where it struck a chain-link fence along Veterans Memorial Highway.

Total damage was listed at $1,000-$2,500. Damage to the car was minimal, police said, just to the rear bumper. The fence, however, had bent posts and was pulled loose from its anchors in a couple of spots.

Another minor mishap was reported at 4:14 p.m. Wednesday at Washington and Jackson streets.

Officer Albert Epple reported that Alexandra Mahaffey, 19, Greencastle, was turning her 1995 Dodge Stratus left onto Washington Street while Carrie Miller, 55, Reelsville, was turning right and a collision occurred.

Both drivers reported having the green light, Epple noted.

Total damage was estimated at $1,000-$2,500.

One citation was issued early Thursday by city officers.

-- At 1:32 a.m., Tonnetta Evans, 41, Ladoga, was ticketed by Officer Eastham at Bloomington Street and Veterans Highway for an expired license plate (April 21).
