Area 30 awards scholarships to outstanding seniors

Area 30 Career Center conducted its annual Senior Awards Program May 16 to recognize students' accomplishments in their CTE programs. In addition, Area 30 awarded more than $10,000 in scholarships to outstanding seniors.

Top honors went to Brittany Birt of South Putnam High School, a two-year Teacher Education (TE) student. She received a $1,500 scholarship from Dixie Chopper and Area 30 Scholarship Fund.

Andy Lane of Cloverdale High School, a two-year Automotive Collision student, was awarded $750 from Area 30 Career Center's Automotive Collision program and a $200 gift certificate from B and K Automotive/NAPA.

Students who received a $750 scholarship include:

-- Brenly Bratcher, SPHS, ICE, from Therese Cunningham of Cunningham State Farm Insurance and Area 30 Scholarship Fund.

-- Tyler Coffman, Greencastle High School, EMT, from Putnam County Community Foundation's Karl and Amanda Reiblich Memorial Fund and Area 30.

-- Blake Doolin, SPHS, Computer Systems Networking (CSN), from Teachers Credit Union and Area 30.

-- Dakota Jobes, Eminence High School, Health Careers (HC), from Brehob Nurseries and Area 30.

-- Whitney Stierwalt, Eminence, HC, from Headley Hardware and Equipment Rental.

Scholarships of $600 were awarded to:

-- Jessi Covert, GHS, HC, from Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home and Area 30.

-- Lynsey Herrick, North Putnam High School, ICE, from Hayes, Murphy, Sharp and Brackney Insurance and Area 30.

-- Mallory Cash, SPHS, TE, from Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home and Area 30.

Meanwhile, Ellen Gobert, GHS, HC, received a $500 scholarship from David and Alice Greenburg and Area 30 and Sabrina Arnold, GHS, HC, was awarded $500 from Area 30.

Awards of $450 from Area 30 went to Savannah Fox, EHS, EMT; and Brooke Thompson, CHS, HC.

Bailey Brewer, GHS, TE, received a $300 scholarship award along with a $50 Wal-Mart card.

Students who received a $300 scholarship from Area 30 include Rachelle Lady, GHS, HC; Arial Immel, CHS, TE; Ciera Wood, SPHS, ECE; Taylor Downing, GHS, HC; Ashtin Ford, GHS, EMT; Makenzie Green, GHS, ICE; and Caleb Robinson, GHS, Civil Engineering and Architecture (CEA) and CSN.

Tyler Piersall, SPHS, Culinary Arts, was awarded $200 from Area 30's Culinary Arts Program.

In 2011 the Putnam County Fraternal Order of Police established a scholarship fund to award $506.76 annually to an outstanding Law Enforcement student in memory of and to honor Putnam County Sheriff's Department Capt. Jim Baugh who gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the line of duty. This year's recipient is James Shaw, SPHS. He received additional money from Area 30 for a total award of $600.

Several students who have studied in the automotive field received $1,000 scholarships from both Lincoln College of Technology and Ohio Technical College. Those students are Scott Petrey and Andy Lane, CHS; Joe Lehr, NPHS; Trey Greene, EHS; Nick Nevins and Willis Kemp, GHS.

Kyle Alexander, EHS, was awarded a total of $4,500 from Lincoln College of Technology and Ohio Technical College.

Area 30 is able to continue to award scholarships each year to deserving students thanks to the generous donations from many local businesses and individuals who support Area 30 students and Career and Technical Education.
