Cougars hang on for win over North Vermillion

Thursday, May 23, 2013

DANVILLE -- In a night plagued with penalties for the Cougars and Falcons, the North Putnam boys' golf team came up with a way to win, beating visiting North Vermillion 185-186.

Jake Smith was the low scorer for the Cougars, shooting a 43. He was followed by Danny Smith (45), Jon Willard (48), Ben Hazelgrove (49), Austin Judy and Mason Asher (50) and Jake Holtz (52).

"We are still struggling with getting all of the players actually playing to their potential game on the same night," NPHS coach Linda Patrick said. "Only getting two good scores out of seven players isn't going to do it as we approach the upcoming sectionals. ... It was nip and tuck to the final score coming in to see who would win it.

"This is too tight for comfort."

North Vermillion freshman Will Martin was medalist on Tuesday, shooting a 42.

The Cougars have one final regular-season match before the postseason begins in two weeks.

"The boys practice a lot on their golf skills but they need more practice in how to improve their mental game and decision-making," Patrick said. "This is the hardest part of golf, getting the intangibles all together at the same time the golf skills are at their best."

NPHS wraps up the regular season Thursday at home (Twin Bridges) against Fountain Central at 4:30 p.m.

Sectionals are Monday, June 3 at Crawfordsville.
