Local athletes come up with big regional performances
EVANSVILLE -- Colleen Weatherford will make a final attempt to win a state title next week at the IHSAA State Finals in the 800 and 1600-meter relay runs.
Weatherford, seeded third in the 800 after her 2:12.90 run, will be joined by Greencastle teammate Jessica Lenihan and North Putnam's Samantha Lucas, both competing in the shot put.
Several other Putnam County athletes competed in the regional to finish out their seasons.
Greencastle's Katlyn King finished seventh in the 100-meter dash while the 4x100-meter relay team of King, Bailey Lausee, Erica Hoagland and Carissa Johnson finished 12th.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Weatherford, Alex Stoffregen, Allison White and Brittany Welker finished 13th, as did the 4x800-meter relay team of Stoffregen, Kayla Cash, Brittany Love and Sammy Haynes.
Cloverdale's Paige Gruener finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles while Claudia Monnett finished in the same place in the 3200-meter run.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Gruener, Miranda Tate, Gloria Butler and Angelica Manning finished 15th and the 4x800-meter relay team of Monnett, Bailee Stevens, Laura Worthington and Amillia Nally finished fifth.
South Putnam's Ariel Higgins finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles while teammates Deborah Cheatham finished tied for 13th in the high jump and Kendal DeHaan finished 16th in the 400-meter dash. North Putnam's Audrey Healey finished 12th in the long jump.
