Burger King awards scholarship to GHS student

Thursday, June 6, 2013

A Greencastle High School student was recently a recipient a 2013 Burger King Program $1,000 Scholarship Award.

Carrisa Johnson of Greencastle High School won the scholarship through the Burger King McLamore Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Burger King Worldwide, Inc.

The scholars program is one of the premier programs of the Burger King McLamore Foundation, which is named in honor of the Burger King brand's co-founder, James W. McLamore, whose commitment to philanthropy and education made him a pillar of community service throughout his lifetime.

To date, the foundation has awarded more than $20 million in scholarships to high school seniors, Burger King employees, their spouses/domestic partners and children across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

"The Burger King Scholars Program continues to put deserving, hard-working students one step closer to realizing their dreams of obtaining a college education," said Andrea Tejada, executive director, Burger King McLamore Foundation. "With the help of scholarship awards, a bright future is possible for these individuals, and we look forward to carrying on the tradition in the future."

Scholarship awards help students offset the cost of attending college or a post-secondary vocational/technical school. Recipients are selected based on their grade point average, extracurricular activities, community service and/or work experience.

"By supporting the Burger King℠ Scholars Program, we are helping to change the lives of recipients in our communities, one scholarship at a time," said Kevin Haas, owner of the Greencastle Burger King Restaurant. "Contributing to the advancement of education and helping our students ultimately achieve their dreams are right in line with the Foundation's mission and core values, and we are honored to be a vital part of this initiative."

Throughout 2012, the management and crew of the nine Central Indiana Burger King Restaurants operated by Kevin Haas, including the local Greencastle restaurant, raised and donated funds that have resulted in eight scholarships being awarded to Central Indiana students in 2013.
