Dr. Robert Farber, 99, of Greencastle, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.

Born Jan. 12, 1914 in Geneseo, Ill., he was the son of Charles William and Hulda (Ogden) Farber.

Dr. Farber was vice president and academic dean emeritus at DePauw University.

He was a Rector Scholar and 1935 graduate with distinction from DePauw University, University of Chicago, MA in 1940, and Indiana University, D.Ed in 1950.

He was at DePauw University from 1935--1979 except for World War II in 1941--1946, receiving the Bronze Star Medal for service in the European Theater.

At Depauw he served as vice president and academic dean for 26 years and acting president in 1976 and 1977.

While serving at DePauw, he was honored with the Old Gold Goblet, Honorary Degree of Humane Letters, Leather Medal, Rector Scholar Achievement Award, President of the North Central Association of Academic Deans and Who's Who in America.

His community service included an honorary 33 degree Scottish Rite Mason, AARP: Past president of the local chapter, past State Legislative Chairman, Assistant State Director, Local Coordinator of Housing Program, Past president, Putnam County Foundation: Past president and over 50 year member of the Greencastle Kiwanis, Past president Health Careers Committee, Member of the Putnam county Council on Aging, Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church, American Heart Association, Putnam County Mental Health Association, V.F.W. and other organizations.

He married Vera (Kierstead) Farber and Edna E. (Klutts) Farber; and along with his parents, and brothers, Herbert, Richard, and William Farber, have preceded him in death.

Survived by his two children, Charlie Farber and wife Jayne of Columbus and Jean Farber Braun and husband Ronald of Winston Salem, N.C.; grandchildren, Ann and Rob.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Gobin Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service.

Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
