Creek stomping and night sky viewing at McCloud Nature Park

Monday, July 8, 2013

Expert stargazers from the Indiana Astronomical Society will join Hendricks County Parks and Recreation naturalists for the free monthly astronomy program at McCloud Nature Park on July 13.

Join in the Nature Center at 8:45 p.m. for a sky seminar, which will provide emphasis on actual observing, helping beginners find their way around the night sky by learning how a telescope works, and how to recognize constellations, planets, galaxies and nebulae of all kinds that may be seen in Saturday night's sky.

Following the seminar, there will be an outdoor viewing session through a limited number of binoculars and telescopes provided (or the public can bring their own). The outdoor stargazing is dependent upon clear skies, but the introductory sky seminar in the Nature Center will take place rain or shine. Leave the light pollution of the city behind and enjoy the beautiful scenery and night skies of McCloud Nature Park.

Learn about the amphibians and reptiles of Big Walnut Creek in McCloud Park in this fun-filled adventure program. Also on July 13, meet McCloud's naturalists at the McCloud Nature Center at 2 p.m. and embark upon a hiking adventure from one end of the park to the other, seeking out frogs, turtles, salamanders and snakes in their natural habitat.

The public may need water shoes and a PFD for this up-close and personal opportunity to learn about the amphibians and reptiles of McCloud. This free program is designed for all ages and will last about two hours. Come out and cool off on this creek stomping adventure.
