GROVELAND -- An Indianapolis man was airlifted to Methodist Hospital Saturday night after he reportedly walked onto U.S. 36 in front of an SUV.

Emergency responders were called to Groveland at 10:29 p.m. with a report that a vehicle had struck a pedestrian.

Brandi L. Holtze, 40, Roachdale, told the Putnam County Sheriff's Department she was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer.

She told Deputy Kyle Gibbons she had slowed as she approached the Floyd Township town for the area's reduced speed limit.

Holtze added that she saw the pedestrian, 64-year-old Rodney Womack, on the west side of the Masonic temple, but that he appeared to be waiting for her to pass.

As the SUV got nearer, however, Womack reportedly walked into the road and was hit by the left front of the vehicle, then rolling onto the windshield and over the top.

Womack suffered a number of injuries in the collision, including a shattered pelvis, broken right shoulder blade, broken ribs on the right and left side, broken left ankle and sprained right ankle.

Operation Life ambulance transported Womack from the scene to the Floyd Township Fire Department. He was then taken to Indianapolis by Lifeline.

Witness statements indicate that Womack may have been under the influence of alcohol. However, police will need a subpoena to obtain certified test results from the hospital.

Holtze, who had her children in the vehicle, suffered minor injuries but refused medical treatment at the scene.

Other responding agencies included PMH Ambulance, Bainbridge Fire Department and Floyd Township Fire Department.

Gibbons was assisted at the scene by reserve deputies Barry Barger and Denna De La Cruz, Sheriff Steve Fenwick and Col. Tom Helmer.
