Calling all VW owners for 2013 parade

Saturday, July 13, 2013
A line of classic and contemporary VW Beetles, followed by the relatively rare VW Thing, cruise along the 2010 4-H Fair Parade route. The VW Brigade is again calling for entries for the Friday, July 19 parade, hoping to top the 50 mark for the first time.

The VW Brigade will ride again in the Friday, July 19 Putnam County 4-H Fair Parade, and this year organizers want at least 50 entries.

The Brigade will meet at the Greencastle Middle School parking lot from 5:30-6:30 p.m., before making its way to East Washington Street at 6:30 p.m. to start the parade.

Dick Funk, who owns D&K Beetles at 7 E. Jacob St., is the co-organizer of the event, along with Lee Creed. Funk said the annual gathering is just for fun, and an attraction that keeps crowds at the parade until the very end.

"We're the last thing in the parade and the kids aren't going to let the parents leave until they see the 'Herbies,'" Funk said.

All Volkswagen vehicles from 1953 through the present are welcome, not just Herbies. Besides Beetles, VW Jettas, Rabbits, Vans, Things and all other models of "Das Auto" are welcome. The condition of the vehicles also does not matter --new or old; mint or weather; or somewhere in between.

The variety of VWs also includes kit cars on Volksagen chassis and last year even a zero-turn lawnmower with a VW engine.

"Anything Volkswagen, that's the only requirement," Funk said.

This year, the Brigade will even feature a locally owned Volkswagen that holds two Bonneville Salt Flats land speed records. This speedy model will be displayed on a trailer only, not driving in the parade.

Participants can enjoy the company of fellow owners and see more than a half-century of VW history. People who want to throw candy to children are welcome.

The Brigade has previously featured between 30 and 50 vehicles, but has never actually topped the 50 mark, so Funk and Creed thought it would make for a nice goal.
