ParkFest returns Tuesday evening

Monday, July 15, 2013
Featuring (from left) guitarist and singer Rick Barcus, drummer Jeremy Hayes, bassist Dennis Furr and guitarist Glen Furr, Saturday Shoes will play ParkFest on Tuesday evening at Robe-Ann Park.

With only four ParkFest shows remaining for the summer of 2013, this week's installment will feature a group of veterans to the annual Robe-Ann Park festival and a first-timer.

Local rockers Saturday Shoes, featuring a new addition to their lineup, along with singer-songwriter Jason Aaron Coons will grace the stage of the Bob Flanigan Bandshell for the free 6:30 p.m. Tuesday show.

As always, ParkFest is presented by the Greencastle Civic League.

Saturday Shoes remains the premiere alt-country and indie rock cover band in Putnam County. Entering their sixth year of playing music together, the band has undergone some recent changes.

Glen Furr replaced departed songwriting prodigy Anthony Mullis (aka Gus Moon) in late 2012, providing a second guitar and harmony presence that had been missing for over a year.

The addition of Furr has allowed the band to stretch out. His bandmates feel it was a perfect fit. His musical inclinations and repertoire fit well with the band's mission, which is to eschew popular music for the raw, quintessentially American sound of alt-country and indie rock.

However, they have been known to be suckers for disco and 1970s soft rock.

All labels aside, the band still has a wide array of songs to choose from, so ParkFest-goers can expect broad choices in the set list. Recently the band has covered artists from Bob Dylan to Foxygen, from the Grateful Dead to the Drive-By Truckers. The list of artists they cover is simply too long to print.

Saturday Shoes is a band that anyone can enjoy. They may cover a song from 50 years ago, or from last week. In the end, the band is simply devoted to having and providing a good time.

Along with the addition of Glen Furr, who hails from Cloverdale, Rick Barcus of Greencastle plays guitar and provides lead vocals, journeyman musician Dennis Furr of Cloverdale plays bass guitar and Greencastle native Jeremy Hayes plays drums.

Saturday Shoes looks forward to playing another ParkFest and hopes to see lots of new and familiar faces on Tuesday night.

Jason Aaron Coons is a singer-songwriter who hails from Indianapolis.

With a style described as post-modern rock/indie, Coons released his debut full-length album "The Numbers" in August 2012.

With the Putnam County Fair coming up next week ParkFest will be taking the week off. The series will return on Tuesday, July 30 with Carly Rhine and Runaway Moon.

The final two shows of the season will be Cash Prize Karaoke with PB and Jam on Aug. 13 and Gus Moon and War Radio on Aug. 20.
