Sheriff's Department

* At 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, Col. Tom Helmer was dispatched to a property-damage accident at Indiana and Liberty streets in Greencastle.

Ashley L. Miles, 23, Greencastle, had been parked facing south on North Indiana Street in a 2003 Dodge Neon.

She attempted to back up onto Liberty Street at a high rate of speed, turning to the right, causing the car to jump the curb in the southwest portion of the intersection. The car entered the parking lot of a business and hit a stop sign with the driver's door and left front fender.

Helmer said yaw marks indicated Miles was accelerating too fast for backing.

Damage to the sign post was minimal. Vehicle damage included the portions that hit the stop sign, as well as a flat right front tire.

Helmer was assisted at the scene by Greencastle Police Capt. Mike Hanlon and Officer Ed Wilson.

Damage was estimated at $1,001-$2,500.

* At 5:14 a.m. Wednesday, William M. Welch, 32, Terre Haute, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2005 Cadillac CST when he hit a deer.

Capt. Danny Wallace estimated damages at $2,501-$5,000.
