Greencastle Elks Lodge 1077 is again supporting the youth in the Putnam County community with three recent donations provided through a grant from the Elks National Foundation. The Dictionary Project, which has provided dictionaries to Ms. Mann's fifth-grade class at Cloverdale (below) and Mrs. McCammack's Fillmore fifth-graders (below right), is intended to promote literacy to children as they transition from learning how to read to identifying and using information. The Elks joined this movement in 2004 nationwide and have donated more than 1.2 million dictionaries to students and their teachers. This year Greencastle Lodge 1077 is providing dictionaries to all Putnam County fifth-graders, along with Thesaurus and World Atlases. Meanwhile, Greencastle Elks Exalter Ruler Danny Wallace (right photo), accompanied by Leading Knight Dave Wells, and Loyal Knight Patty Evans, presents a $500 check to Boy Scout Troop 99, Greencastle. Wallace and the Elks note that the Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations.
