South Putnam come in second at West Vigo's weekend tournament

WEST TERRE HAUTE -- The South Putnam boys' tennis team began its season with a second-place finish at the Viking Invitational Tennis Tournament this weekend.

The Eagles got two matches from each player in the lineup, with the No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles team finishing second in its flight. Stewart beat his White River Valley opponent 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round, then lost to West Vigo 1-1.

The one-doubles team of Tyler Long and Aaron Cole beat Turkey Run 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round before losing to West Vigo by the same score in the finals.

No. 2 doubles won its second match to finish third in its flight. Jake Carmichael and Zane Crosby lost to West Vigo 6-2, 6-1, then beat Turkey Run 6-0, 6-2.

"Overall, I was happy with our effort," South Putnam coach Zach Love said. " Some of the other schools there had played a few matches already this season. For our first match I thought we competed well. I look forward to building off this weekend in the season ahead."

No. 1 singles Trey Moore and No. 2 singles Collin Berry each lost both their matches.

The Eagles are next scheduled for a match on Monday, Sept. 9 against Southmont at 5 p.m.
