Cougars fall to Chargers, 3-1

ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam boys' soccer team fell to the visiting North Montgomey Chargers 3-1 on Tuesday. Both teams battled the hot and humid conditions throughout the night.

"I think we played alright," North Putnam head coach David Moeller said. "We had defensive lapses, which allowed those goals to be scored."

The bout started out with neither team gaining any momentum at any time. Through the first 14 minutes neither team had much of a chance of getting off a good shot at the goalie. With 25:55 left in the half, it happened.

"I thought scoring the first goal was big, but then we had some mscues that led to goals (for North Montgomery)," said NPHS coach Moeller.

Senior Zach Hunter broke away from the Charger defenders and fed a nice pass to streaking freshman Kavyn Timm to take the lead.

The lead didn't last long though as the Chargers would answer back quickly with a goal by junior Jordan Corey with 24:36 left in the half to tie the game at 1 all.

With another break in the scoring the Cougars continued to work the edges of the field and try to push the ball. But the Chargers would get another shot to hit the back of the net.

This time senior Uriah Martinez found the goal with 4:35 left in the half and put the Chargers up for good 2-1.

When the half ended the Cougars had to feel pretty good about sophomore goalkeeper Bailey Allen. He had been pressured all of the first half but still played tremendously and the Cougars hoped that the second half would be different.

"(Bailey) played pretty well. He made some nice saves," coach Moeller said.

The Cougars controlled the ball most of the second half and despite allowing one goal, they played pretty well.

The goal came with 18:12 left in the game on a freshman Brock Ireland kick. The score would go to 3-1 and that where it would stay.

The Cougars had their best chance with 8 minutes left in the game when senior Bennett Hazelgrove nailed one off the post from close range.

"We had good opportunities, we just couldn't convert on the opportunities we had," Moeller said.

The Cougars ended up losing the game 3-1 but it was an improvement over the 7-1 loss last year to North Montgomery.
