Monrovia wins shootout with Cascade 36-28

CLAYTON--Cascade's Zac Butler raced 86 yards for a touchdown on the opening kickoff and Zach Batts had a 98-yard touchdown run with a stripped fumble and a 53-yard touchdown reception from Sawyer Donovan, but the Cadets couldn't contain Monrovia's ground attack Friday in a 36-28 loss in a West Central Conference game at Cascade.

The Cadets (1-1, 0-1 WCC) led 28-19 with 8:43 play after Donovan connected with tight end Chris Howard for a 14-yard touchdown pass. It was preceded by a 47-yard pass from Howard to Brock Stephenson. Cascade had only two first downs after its last touchdown.

Donovan completed nine-of 19 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior did nto throw an interception.

Butler had 47 yards rushing on 16 carries. Batts had two recepitons for 103 yards and one touchdown.

Monrovia had 548 yards rushing, 251 on 25 carries by halfback Jaden Rhea. Trevor Ellis had 172 yards on 15 carries and Jeremiah Welty 123 yards on 23 carries. Rhea had touchdown runs of 70 and 53 yards, Ellis scored on runs of 56 and 13 and Welty scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 34-yard run with 11.3 reconds left in the third quarter.

After Butler took the opening kickoff and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown, Monrovia tied it, 7-7, on Rhea's 70-yard touchdown with 39.4 seconds left in the first quarter.

Cascade went back on top, 14-7, on Donovan's 53-yard toucdown pass to Batts.

The Bulldogs drove the ball to the Cadets' 3-yard line, but on first down Batts stripped the ball from Rhea and went 98 yards down the sideline for a touchdown that put Cascade on top, 21-7.

Monrovia drove 63 yards on 10 plays, with Ellis scoring from the 13 with 3:41 left in the half. The kick failed, leaving the Bulldogs down 21-13 at the half.

Monrovia received the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on three plays. On third-and-15, Ellis ran 56 yards for a touchdown. The Bulldogs' two-point conversion failed.

Cascade drove 64 yards on five plays to take a 28-19 lead. Donovan completed a 47-yard pass to Stephenson and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Howard.

Monrovia forced Cascade to punt and took over at its 44. On second-and-7, Rhea dashed 53 yards for a touchdown, Connor Stader kicked the PAT and the Bulldogs were back within two, 28-26.

Monrovia's defense pushed Cascade back after the Cadets took over at their 31.

A 15-yard penalty dropped the Cadets back to the 16. On second-and-25, linebacker Cole Miller chased Donovan into an intentional grounding penalty that left the Cadets at the 3. A penalty put the Cadets at the 1 and Welty tackled Butler in the end zone for the safety and a 28-28 tie.

After an exchange of possessions, Welty ran for the decisive touchdown.

Cascade's final three possessions ended with a punt, a lost fumble and when the clock ran out at midfield.
