WICAA Foster Grandparent seeks local volunteers

Saturday, September 14, 2013

The WICAA Foster Grandparent Program is expanding its services in Putnam County.

Foster grandparent volunteers are role models, mentors and tutors to children in need. For those interested in staying active while having a positive impact on a child in your community, the Foster Grandparent Program may be an option.

Foster Grandparent Volunteers serve at local organizations that:

-- Help children learn to read and provide one-on-one tutoring.

-- Mentor troubled teenagers and young mothers.

-- Care for premature infants or children with disabilities.

-- Help children who have been abused or neglected.

All that's needed to join is an ability to give the kind of comfort and love that can set a child on the path toward a successful future.

Foster grandparents serve an average of 20 hours up to 40 hours per week in locations including schools, daycare facilities and Head Start centers.

The program is open to individuals age 55 and over, who meet certain income guidelines, have a positive interview, pass a pre-service physical, and background check.

Volunteers receive pre-service orientation, training from the organization where they will serve, supplemental insurance while on duty, meals as provide by the volunteer site, and receive a small stipend.

Anyone interested in becoming a foster grandparent or knows of someone who would like to volunteer may call 812-232-1264 for more information.

Enrollment applications are also available at the Putnam County WICAA office located at 620 Tennessee St. in Greencastle.
