Tiger Cubs lose first conference game to Cadets

The boys game was a different story. It was a close game throughout and the Tiger Cubs almost pulled it out in two overtimes but lost on a last second shot 2-1.

Neither team scored in the first half but even so, it was very entertaining. The real treat was in the second half.

"At times I thought we played well. We got a bit too relaxed on defense which opened up the middle a little," Greencastle head coach Dave Lilly said.

The The Tiger Cubs scored first on a goal by junior Sedrick Weinschenk with 29:06. The ball glanced off the Cadet keeper's hands and then off Sedricks head into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

The lead vanished with 5:58 left in the game when Cadet senior Hayden Suter put one in for the tie. Both defenses held and the game went into overtime.

Greencastle has nothing to be dissapointed about though as they played very good skillful soccer.

"Getting through regulation I felt pretty good about our chances to score in either of the overtime periods," Lilly said. "The last two times we played we went to overtimes then PKs so I thought we had a pretty good shot at beating them."

No one scored in the first OT but GHS senior goalkeeper Zane Miller had some nice saves on his was to a total of nine on the night.

The second OT was all but over with eight seconds left on the clock as a Tiger Cubs defenseman booted it out.

The Cadet hustled over to it and threw it back in with just under 5 seconds left in the last OT.

The ball flew straight at Suter's head and he headed it in with 1.4 seconds left on the clock for the win. The Tiger Cubs got the ball one last time and Miller missed the shot from midfield.

It was a thrilling game in all aspects but the Tiger Cubs just couldn't pull it out.

"The Suter kid is a physical presence. He's big he's strong and he just managed to flick it in the goal," Lilly said. "We weren't at full strength. Paul (Heithaus) wasn't at 100 percent, Sedrick got knocked out with his knee and hopefully we'll get another shot.

"Hopefully we'll be at full strength then."
