UAW Local 2382 participates in King 50th Anniversary March

United Auto Workers local 2382 of Greencastle members made their way to Washington, D.C., for the recent Martin Luther King 50th Anniversary March. Deborah Rubeck and John Huffman used pro-union signs to shield themselves from the sun during the march to the Lincoln Memorial.

Members from the United Auto Workers Local 2382, IAC in Greencastle, attended the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Martin Luther King Civil Rights March in Washington, D.C.

On Friday, Aug. 23, Some 50 UAW members and family members boarded a bus to Washington. After a few stops, the group arrived in Washington around 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Meanwhile, John Huffman, Deborah Rubeck, Becky and Brad Allen, take a break during the march to grab some water and some shade.

The group attended the commemorative march, which included several speeches about not only civil rights, but voter rights, women's rights and worker rights as well. Local police estimated there were around 250,000 people at the march, which was conducted at the National Mall in Washington.

Some of the group's members were amazed at the amount of cooperation and unity among people on a hot, tiring day.

One member said, "For once in my life, I didn't see black people, white people, whatever, I just saw people."

"I really got an education on this trip," another said. "Not only about the march, but about D.C. in general.

"The International UAW coordinated the trip and the members were grateful for being able to participate in the event with such historical ties.
