DPU students, community invited to break bread at Oct. 11 'Dine on the Square' event

Long before the slang term "breaking bad" grew to mean challenging authority and living on the edge, "breaking bread" was a good thing held near and dear to the heart.

And "breaking bread" has endured as a time-honored metaphor for sharing a meal together in peace and partnership. In Greencastle, a planned new event, "Dine on the Square," is designed to do just that.

Featuring food from four local eateries combined into one meal, the inaugural dinner event is on tap for Friday, Oct. 11 on the Courthouse Square.

Tickets are being sold at $5 each for a meal to be composed of dishes from Almost Home, Chief's, the Downtown Cafe and the Putnam Inn.

"Dine on the Square" will be staged from 5-7 p.m. on the north and east sides of the square (North Indiana and West Franklin streets).

The meal will consist of pulled pork sandwiches from Chief's, macaroni and cheese from Putnam Inn, a salad from the Downtown Café and a "dessert shot" from Almost Home.

Purpose of the event, inspired by DePauw University Student Government, is to foster beneficial relationships between the school and the community with both students and townspeople invited to attend.

And as a charity event, half of all ticket proceeds will be donated to the United Way of Putnam County.

Tickets are on sale at the participating restaurants and will be available at the Greencastle Farmers Market Saturday (when its new hours of 9 a.m.-1 p.m. kick in).

Musical entertainment for "Dine on the Square" will be provided by DePauw School of Music students and student-run band(s).

During the evening, raffle tickets will be offered for a chance to win small prizes from local businesses.

"We really want to stress the purpose of this event, in addition to the obvious philanthropic element, is to celebrate and perpetuate the long relationship between DePauw University and the Town of Greencastle," explained Adam May, vice president of community relations for DePauw Student Government.

"We hope this event will inspire mutually beneficial relationships between students and community members," he added.

"This effort is part of a renewed initiative by DePauw Student Government to improve the relationship between these parties. Hopefully 'Dine on the Square' becomes an annual event."
