Mt. Vernon of Posey County made the three-hour trek to Putnam County for the first time, taking on South Putnam Friday night.

The trip back will be filled with images of Lucas Lorian galloping through the Wildcat defense as the SPHS junior running back amassed 288 yards and six touchdowns to propel the Eagles to a 45-21 victory.

South Putnam head coach Troy Burgess said that the line did its job Friday and Lorian did the rest.

"We were going to line up and try to run the football and we won the battle up front," Burgess said. "It starts up front and that was something we wanted to get back to this week."

Senior Rudy Harris keyed the hosts' first score by blocking a punt off the foot of Mt. Vernon's Michael Cannato and Lorian scored two plays later to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

After a Wildcat drive stalled, senior fullback Joe Waters set up Lorian's second score with a 60-yard burst before the junior ran in from 16 yards to double the score at 14-0.

Sawyer Arnold did most of the legwork on the following drive with 35 yards worth of runs before Lorian punched in from 12 yards out to extend the lead further.

Mt. Vernon hit back with touchdowns on consecutive drives that closed the gap to 20-14 with a minute of the first half to play. Lorian, though, eluded the Wildcat defense yet again for a 68-yard run to make the lead 28-14 with nine seconds left in the first half.

Burgess said the run shifted the momentum back into South Putnam's favor.

"The momentum had changed and we weren't very happy," Burgess said. "Between the punt block and the run, those were backbreakers for Mt. Vernon."

Lorian punched home from 15 yards after the break and from 57 yards just before the end of the third quarter to put South Putnam in a comfortable 42-14 position.

Zane Yon tacked on a field goal before the visitors added one more score late, but that was not enough to spoil Lorian's night.

With the win, the Eagles move to 6-1 and have a chance to clinch a share of the West Central Conference with a win over Monrovia next week.

"Monrovia's a good team," Burgess said. "They're big and physical and we've got to focus on our assignments. They're going to come after us and we've got to be ready to play."
