Falling asleep at the wheel was cited as the cause for a late-night crash Thursday evening near the entrance of the DePauw Nature Park. The crash flipped the car, no injuries were reported.

DePauw University Office of Public Safety was on the scene of a crash at the entrance at the DePauw Nature Park at 9:30 p.m. Thursday night.

The vehicle was in the eastbound lane on Walnut Street headed into Greencastle as the driver claimed to have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Matt Demmings at the Office of Public Safety was the lead in reporting the accident. The driver of the 1994 Buick Century veered off the road and flipped, Demming said.

After the vehicle flipped the driver was able to crawl from the vehicle and retrieve a dog that was in it. The car became engulfed in flames. Greencastle and Madison Township Fire Departments were on the scene to douse the flames.

The driver only received minor injuries and stayed at the scene try to find a dog that had been in the vehicle, gotten out and was now missing. The Black Labrador was later found.

Demmings stated that damage had been done to the entrance of the nature park. The vehicle demolished one of the stone lamps that sit at either side of the entrance and some fencing had been knocked down. No estimates on the cost of the damage are available at this time.

Departments at the scene included DePauw University Office of Public Safety, Putnam County Sheriff Department, Greencastle Fire Department and Madison Township Fire Department.
