The Greencastle boys' cross country team advanced to regionals this weekend by finishing the South Putnam Sectional in fourth place on Tuesday.

GHS scored 117 points as a team, behind Avon (33), Brownsburg (48) and Danville (89). Plainfield (125) was fifth.

South Putnam finished in sixth-place as a team (130) but its top five runners will advance to Saturday's Ben Davis Regional as individuals.

The Eagles ran well, SPHS coach Brandon Welti said, exceeding his expectations.

Cloverdale finished the 12-team event in 10th place. North Putnam had three runners compete.

The top five teams advance to regionals, as do the top ten individuals from non-advancing teams.

Greencastle's Elijah Brattain was the highest local individual finisher, crossing the tape in 13th-place, one of three GHS runners in the top 18.

Clayton Wilson finished 16th for the Tigers Cubs, followed by Taylor Secrest in 18th-place, Braden Pershing (27th), Cameron Lewis (44th), Levis Lewis (50th) and Peyton Jones (51st).

The Tiger Cubs battled through injuries, GHS coach Garry Anderson said, and were pleased to advance as a team.

While South Putnam did not qualify for regionals as a team, its five individual runners will be eligible for a team score on Saturday.

Berndt Freeman led the Eagles, placing 17th overall, followed by Kieffer Vittetow, in 24th, Lane Franklin in 25th, Logan Vandermark in 31st and Tyler Nield in 33rd.

Tyler Vandermark (38th) and Colton Bunten (42nd) also competed for South Putnam.

Cloverdale's top finisher was Ethan Maners, who placed 48th overall. Nick Blundell (52nd), Bret Brumfield (62nd), Clayton Byrd (67th) and Jacob Waycott (68th) rounded out the field for the Clovers.

The best run for North Putnam came from Avery Gambill, who finished in 61st-place. Chase Salyers (69th) and Trae Straziscar (71st) also ran well for the Cougars.

Runners from the Ben Davis and South Putnam Sectionals feed into Saturday's Ben Davis Regional. The boys will run first, followed by a girls' race, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
