South Putnam junior Madison Egold ran a season-best race to lead the local finishers and help her team qualify for the next round during Tuesday's cross country sectional at South Putnam High School.

The Eagles finished in fifth place with 147 points, one spot behind Greencastle's 120. The top five teams qualify for the Ben Davis Regional on Saturday.

Egold finished the race at 21:26, shaving more than 20 seconds off her time from the Putnam County race 10 days earlier and placed 13th overall.

Greencastle's top finisher was junior Brittany Love, who came in 17th. She was followed closely by Tiger Cub sophomore Corrie Romer in 19th and sophomore Samantha Haynes in 23rd.

Soophomore Kat King (30th), seniors Alex Stoffregen (31st) and Megan Haynes (33rd) and Alyssa Seeman (62nd) also helped GHS advance.

Avon, which won the team race, had its five scoring runners all place in the top nine overall and all seven runners in the top 12.

Plainfield finished second with 59 points, followed by Brownsburg with 97.

Led by Egold's strong finish, the remaining Eagles all ran impressive races as well. Julianna DeLano finished 24th, Ariel Higgins 27th, Jessica Jones 40th, Katelyn Lady 49th and Michaela Scales 52nd.

This is the first time a South Putnam runner has reached regionals since Shannon Egold qualified for the Eagles as an individual in 2007.

North Putnam had three runners compete at the sectional race. Senior Alexandria Land led the squad, finishing in 57th-place. Kylee Detro came in 60th and Claire Dean 61st. Brooke Smith also began the race for the Cougars.

Cloverdale's only competitor on Tuesday was Clare Plamondon. She finished the race in 46th-place. Plamondon was only a few places from qualifying individually.

The top ten competitors not advancing with their team also moves to the regional event. Runners from the South Putnam Sectional and the Ben Davis Sectional advanced to Saturday's regional.

The girls' race will follow the boys' race, which is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
