Sheriff's Department

At 5:02 p.m. Wednesday, Mary A. Scales, 44, Greencastle, was westbound attempting to turn right into her driveway at 2507 E. U.S. 40 in a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban. Sherry K. Dowell, 61, Carbon, was also westbound in the right hand lane in a 2005 Ford Explorer.

Sgt. Craig Sibbitt, after reviewing evidence at the scene, said it appeared Scales had slowed to a stop to turn when Dowell's vehicle rear-ended Scales, having not applied the brakes.

The collision pushed Scales' vehicle approximately 60 feet forward, into a ditch on the north side of U.S. 40. The vehicle came to rest on the driver's side, trapping Scales.

Dowell's vehicle continued approximately 80 feet, hitting a guardrail face.

Scales told Sibbitt she was trying to turn and that she was unclear of what happened. The next thing she knew, she was spun around and trapped in the vehicle.

Dowell said she did not see Scales vehicle and that she was trying to look up the location of the nearest gas station.

Sibbitt also advised the sun was very bright to the west and could have restricted Dowell's vision.

Trooper Corey Robinson and Deputy Ronnie Campbell assisted at the scene.

Damage was estimated at $10,001-$25,000.
