Bleu Django brings gypsy jazz back to the Duck

Following a week of no jazz due to fall break, Jazz at the Duck will return on Thursday, Oct. 31 with the gypsy jazz of Bleu Django.

Inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grappelli and their Quintette du Hot Club de France, Bleu Django has been bringing gypsy jazz to Indiana audiences for nearly 10 years.

The roots of the band formed when guitarists Bob Foster and Daryl Jones sat down to play some Reinhardt tunes. In the coming years, the were joined by violinist Carolyn Dutton and bassist Hunt Wiley.

Bleu Django has played regularly and Indianapolis Jazz Club the Chatterbox since shortly after its first public appearance, as well as playing various concerts, festivals and private parties throughout the state.

The group played on the main stage at the Palladium in Carmel during opening week ceremonies and was featured at the annual Folk and Roots Festival in Champagne/Urbana, Ill.

Other venues have included the Indiana Fiddlers Gathering in Battleground, both the wine and the Hops and Harvest Festival in Story, the Ethnic Expo and the Harlequin Theater in Columbus, the Royal Theater in Danville, the Uptown Jazz and Blues Festival in Lafayette, the Indiana University Art Museum's Jazz in July series in Bloomington, the Hedgehog Music Showcase in Arcadia, the Clowes Auditorium at the Indianapolis Central Library and here in Greencastle.

The concert is set for 8:30-10:30 p.m. at The Inn at DePauw's Fluttering Duck, 2 West Seminary St., Greencastle.

As always, Jazz at the Duck is free and open to the public.
