Gas leak shuts down two blocks Tuesday afternoon

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

On Tuesday afternoon a two-block radius of Ohio and Locust street in Greencastle was shut down due to a natural gas leak.

A Vectren crew had been called out due to a small leak that needed to be repaired, and during the work on the leak the pipe was hit, causing a larger leak.

The Greencastle Fire Department was called to the scene between 2:30 and 3 p.m. after the Vectren crew struck the three-inch gas line on the corner of Ohio and Locust street.

The leak was contained and the crew worked to repair the line.

As precaution, the fire department went door to door to notify residents of the danger and asked them to report any suspicious smells.

Underground sewers, water lines and other utilities were checked to make sure that no gas had leaked into the other systems.

A representative of Vectren gas stated that all precautions were taken and that the line had been repaired by late afternoon.

Those responding to the scene were the Greencastle Fire Department, Putnam County Sheriff Department, Greencastle Police Department, Greencastle Street Department and Greencastle Utility Department.
