Cougars open season with swimming win
ROACHDALE -- The North Putnam girls' swim team began the season with the ambitious goal of winning more dual meets this year than they have in the past five combined.
After beating visiting Covenant Christian in the season-opener on Thursday, they're halfway there. The Cougars won 90-68 and picked up victories in eight of the 12 events.
Junior Elizabeth Alford led NPHS, getting individual wins in the 200 free and 100 fly, and helped in the relay sweep.
"This is a good start," NPHS coach Tony Gray said. "I always like competing against Covenant Christian. It's fun to swim against them."
Alford, sophomore Hannah Gray and freshmen Lauren Freije and Nikita Miller opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay.
Miller and Freije have been exceptional throughout the preseason, Gray said.
In the 200 free relay, Rebecca Muse, McKenzie Miles, Lyndsay Roberts and Freije took first-place. Miller, Samantha Freije, Muse and Alford won the 400 free relay.
Lauren Freije won the 50 free, Miller won the 100 free and Gray won the 100 back for the Cougars.
North Putnam's next meet is a full-squad, three-team contest at Tri-West on Monday. South Putnam will also be competing.
