Bernie Deckard, 70, of Crawfordsville passed away at 9:05 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23 in Morgantown, Ind., where he had resided since the end of October at Morgantown Health Care Inn.

Born Sept. 23, 1943 in Crawfordsville, he was the son of Carl Deckard and Rena I. Douglas Meagher.

He married Janet L. Welty on Nov. 12, 1970.

He served in the U.S. Navy for four years.

He worked for AT&T for many years, retiring in 1994 and then worked at S.T.A.R. ambulance and in his shop.

He graduated from Crawfordsville High School and took several additional classes after retirement.

Bernie was a member of the Eagles, where he was a past president, American Legion and New Hope Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Deckard of Crawfordsville; sons Troy Deckard and Jeff (Corey) Deckard, both of Crawfordsville; daughters Melissa (James) Willis of Gainsville, Ga., and Amanda Deckard of Nashville, Ind., and nine grandchildren.

He is also survived by sisters, Twylo (Fred) Davis of Crawfordsville, Joyce Drake of Washington, Ind., Carla (Mardy) Wilson of North Port, Fla., and a brother, Jim (Diane Redman) Deckard of Crawfordsville, as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two nieces and a nephew.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Burkhart Funeral Home, Crawfordsville, with an Eagles service at 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Mike Whitacre and Pastor Dave Deckard officiating. Military rites will also be held.
