Greencastle Spell Bowl team third in state finals contest

Greencastle High School captured third place behind Class 3 state champion Cascade and runner-up North Posey in the recent 2013 Indiana Academic Spell Bowl state finals competition at Purdue University.

GHS representatives Kelly Hansen, Beth Ann Hansen, Zach Wilkerson and Dylan Bodnarick all had perfect scores in the Nov. 16 Spell Bowl competition. Hannah Gellman and Lily Spencer each only missed one word.

Overall, Greencastle raised its score by six points over its area competition showing to finish with 76.

Besides Cascade, North Posey and Greencastle, the other state finalists in Class 3 were North Putnam, North Newton, South Vermillion, Garrett and Andrean High School from Merrillville.

Class 1 results ended in a tie between Penn and Martinsville high schools in the large-school competition.

The Class 2 state title was captured by John Glenn High School, Walkerton.

In Class 4, the 2013 small-school winner was Northeast Dubois High School.
