Annual toy drive seen as huge success

CLOVERDALE -- The Cloverdale School Board heard some good news during its monthly school board meeting Monday evening as it received an update on both the annual toy drive and the board's endowments.

Following the board statement on its stance toward embattled fellow board member Brian Asbury, the meeting moved into a more positive light when FFA President Heather Goss updated the board on the annual community toy drive, which took place Thursday, Dec. 5.

Goss informed the board that with donations up by almost $2,000 the group, which included members of the Cloverdale FFA, Clover-dale Student Council, North Putnam FFA, South Putnam Student Council and the South Putnam FFA, was able to not only provide more families with presents, but was able to buy better gifts.

"It was for any community member that's in need," Goss said. "This year we've served more than 496 kids from Putnam, Owen, Morgan, Clay and Vermillion counties."

Each child that participated in the program received two toys, a stuffed animal, two books as well as a pair of gloves and a hat.

This year, the toy drive had a lot of major sponsors such as the Putnamville Correctional Facility, the Cloverdale Auto Club, Owen Community Bank, Cloverdale McDonald's, Cloverdale United Methodist Church, Family Dollar and many others.

In total the entire program took in nearly $4,000 to provide gifts.

"This group did an amazing job," Cloverdale Superintendent Carrie Milner. This is something that really continues to grow. It really has been an amazing success."

Milner also updated the board on the corporation's endowment, which comes from the Putnam County Community Foundation.

After receiving a quarterly report, Milner advised the board that the Knoy Resource Center Endowment now stands at $34,610 with a maximum payout of $1,801.66.

"I'd like to see that grow," Milner said. "I'm hoping to see it grow a lot."

For the Cloverdale Community Corporation Endowment, which began through a matching grant, currently has a principal amount of $25,075 with a maximum payout of $1,705.98.

In other business:

* The school board honored third-grader Carson Hall, seventh-grader Adriana Mitchell and senior Mitchell Stacy as December Students of the Month.

* The board approved the maternity leave of elementary school guidance counselor Christy Schmeckebier; the hiring of Lisa Harvey as an elementary school guidance counselor; and the reassignment of Maria Langdon to high school custodian.

* The timeline for the drainage project is on track. Project manager Dan Sulkoske will likely attend the January meeting to give a more in-depth update.
