Tiger Cubs sweep rival Athenians in pool
The Greencastle swim teams dived into the water and came out blazing on Monday, sweeping Crawfordsville in all six relays and winning both the boys' and girls' team events.
The Tiger Cub girls won 123-61 and the boys won 127-59.
"I was very pleased to see fast swimming across the board for our Tiger Sharks," GHS coach Kent Menzel said. "The relay sweep for both boys and girls meets was a nice exclamation point to add to the hard work out team has been doing for the first half of the season."
Highlighting the night, Menzel said, was the 100-yard butterfly from senior Rosio Gomez, who finished at 1:10.30, nearly 10 full seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
In total, the Tiger Cubs won 20 of the 24 events.
In addition to Gomez, Menzel said his team had strong performances from senior Emily Wheeler in the 100 breaststroke, senior Nash Firebaugh in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle and junior Elijah Brattin, who won the 100 butterfly and backstroke, his "off" events.
"Crawfordsville is a great opponent and Coach Hedrick is a talented coach," Menzel said, "so it is nice to be on the winning side of that rivalry this year."
