North Putnam graduate plays in DIII championship tonight

Friday, December 20, 2013

North Putnam graduate Hank Spencer will play in his second football national championship with Mount Union tonight against Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The sophomore won the NCAA Elite 89 Award Thursday at the Division III Football Championship in Salem, Va. The Elite 89 is given to student athletes with the highest cumulative GPA.

Spencer graduated from North Putnam a semester early to play for Mount Union football in the 2012 fall. The computer science major kept his GPA at a 4.0 all five semesters at Mount Union.

The linebacker is also the team's captain, which is the first time a sophomore has been captain in school history.

No. 1 Mount Union has 11 national championships under its belt, and looks to make it an even dozen tonight at 7 p.m. at the Stagg Bowl. The game can be watched on ESPNU.
