Donald Leroy Summerlot, 86, of Coatesville, formerly of Indianapolis, passed away at his home on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013 following a lengthy illness.

Don was born Jan. 30, 1927, in Clay County, the son of John Henry and Maggie (Everwine) Summerlot.

He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He enlisted at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged in 1946.

He married Betty Louise McCreery on Oct. 29, 1947. Don worked for the Chrysler Electrical Corporation in Indianapolis, retiring after 32 years of service. While working for Chrysler, he earned an Associate's Degree from Earlham College in Indianapolis.

Don enjoyed being outdoors camping, fishing, cutting and splitting wood, tinkering and spending time with family. He will be remembered for his storytelling ability and knowledge of the Bible.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Maggie Summerlot; wife Betty Summerlot; infant son Tony Wayne Summerlot; and siblings Coy Summerlot, Harry Summerlot, Clyde Summerlot, Lester Willis, Hesten Willis, May Anderson Vess, Helen Summerlot, Ruth Gonser, Florence Hochstetler, Sylvia Cooprider, John Junior Summerlot and Paul Summerlot.

Don is survived by son Donald Steven Summerlot and wife Jackie of Indianapolis; two daughters Linda Bertram and husband Bruce of McDonough, Ga., and Brenda Hazlett and husband Gary of Coatesville; grandchildren Kimberly Maxwell, Laura Tyndall, Brian Bertram, Amanda Wilson, Derrick Shinn, Brad Summerlot, Kelly Lundy, Amber Robertson, David Summerlot, Rebecca Hazlett and Leighla Hazlett; great-grandchildren Brock Maxwell, Brandon Maxwell, Brenna Maxwell, Colin Lundy, Annabelle Lundy, Jayden Wilson, Madisyn Wilson, Allison Robertson, Ashley Robertson, Audrina Robertson, Ryan Bertram, Levi Bertram, Cheyanne Bertram, Chris Oliver, Brian Werden, Stephanie Welsh, Ciara Tyndall, Ava Tyndall, Chloe Tyndall and Sophie Tyndall; and many other extended family members.

Services for Don will be at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home, in Clay City, on Monday, Dec. 23 at 3 p.m. Burial will follow at Beech Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home Monday from noon until time of services.
