The Greencastle and Putnam County community had one last chance to honor Greencastle Fire Department Engineer Pat Carrico on Friday as his funeral procession wove its way through town from Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home to Forest Hill Cemetery. The route passed by the GFD station, where firefighters from Madison and Cloverdale townships saluted GFD Engine No. 1 as it carried Carrico's flag-draped casket past. At the cemetery, one more tribute came from Putnam County Dispatch. After calling for Carrico's Unit 602 three times with a chilling silence as the only response, the dispatcher delivered Carrico's last alarm:
It is with deep regret that the Putnam County Dispatch announces the last alarm for Engineer Pat Carrico. Thank you, Pat, for 29 years of commitment and service to the well being of others. You will be missed by so many and in our hearts forever. 602 will be out of service and your final duty will be to watch over your family and fellow firefighters. Greencastle Fire unit 602 has gone home and is out of service.
