5K run/walk for ALS to welcome in the new year on Wednesday

Local runners and walkers are invited to welcome in 2014 by participating in the New Year's Day 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Chad Smith Foundation for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

The run/walk will begin at 10 a.m. Jan. 1 at Big Walnut Sports Park off State Road 240 in Greencastle.

Registration opens at 9 a.m. Registration is free but donations will be accepted.

Prizes will be offered for the top three places in men's and women's divisions as well as door prizes will be available from area businesses.

Chad Smith is a father, teacher, coach and friend to many in the local community. He ran cross country for Southern Indiana University.

Smith has been a teacher and coach at Northview High School in Brazil for several years.
