Cook takes 106 title for Greencastle at Crawfordsville Invite

CRAWFORDSVILE -- The Greencastle wrestling team pitched in at the Crawfordsville Invitational on Saturday. It finished eighth out of eight teams, but had four wrestlers place in the top three.

Junior Ryley Cook was the Tiger Cubs' top finisher, placing first in the 106 class.

The eight teams that participated (in final standings order) were West Lafayette, North White, Seeger, Pendleton Heights, McCutcheon, Fountain Central, Crawfordsville and Greencastle. Lebanon was scheduled to be there but had to back out. Pendleton Heights took its spot.

The Tiger Cubs came in last place but their effort did not show it. One wrestler fell out of the top four standings.

"We exceeded expectations except for one class," GHS coach Logan Kuhne said, "Now we need to watch tape and prepare for conference next weekend."

GHS sent two competitors to the final round with Cook (19-3) winning the 106-pound championship by a major decision 9-1 and senior Aaron Langdon (27-3) falling to second at 170-pounds by decision 7-4.

Cook won all three of his matches by decisions. His second match was his toughest and most evenly-matched of the day, only winning 3-2 over Pendleton Heights' Tony Flood. Flood finished third and his brother Tyler won the 113 lbs class.

"(Cook) did an excellent job. He is a very good wrestler and he is very tough," Kuhne said.

Kuhne also went on to say that Cook still has work to do but he is very proud of his effort.

Langdon won his first two matches with falls before losing to West Lafayette's Jade Dotty.

Other notables for the Tiger Cubs were Mark Coghill at 220-pounds and Andrew Ruiz at 160-pounds, who both wrestled their way to third. They both just missed the championship round.

The teams that were in this tournament were not teams that GHS would usually face. It helped them gain experience and more adversity before the West Central Conference meet next week.

Next Saturday will be the WCC conference meet starting at 9 a.m. at Cloverdale.

"Any time you get to see different competition it's good for your guys. It gives us a different looks at moves will need to know toward regionals," Kuhne said.
