Tiger Cubs boys hit late three for victory

Saturday, January 25, 2014

It was white-out night at Greencastle High School Friday. Both the boys' and girls' basketball teams participated. The girls' game, ended sadly, on a last second three, but the boys turned around and beat the Cascade Cadets on a last second three, 51-48.

The Cadets (2-12 2-3 West Central) put up a good fight against the Tiger Cubs (5-4 2-1 WCC), but they fell short with Tiger Cubs' junior Colyn Foxx hitting a late three with 1.5 seconds left.

For GHS, this is their second nail-biter in a row. Last Saturday they lost to Edgewood on a last second layup.

"It feels awful to lose," GHS coach Troy Greenlee said, "Especially with the game being a nail-biter."

This week they won on a last second three.

"It is much more of a relief to win," Greenlee said, "It was not totally over until 1.5 seconds left, but I was just proud of the way our kids reacted."

The teams were pretty evenly matched. The first points were not scored until a Cadet layup with 4:17 left in the first.

The first quarter started with CHS taking an 11-4 lead.

By the end, Greencastle went on a 7-0 run to take a tie going into the second.

GHS put it in fight mode in the second and took off. They dominated the quarter and Tiger Cubs' junior Brody Bollman led the way with 10 points in the quarter and 21 overall.

The Tiger Cubs extended their lead to 13 before going in at the break up nine.

Like the first quarter, Cascade got off to a good start in the third. Greencastle only made three shots and the Cadets took momentum into the final quarter of play down two.

The fourth quarter held much excitement. The Tiger Cubs got ahold of themselves and busted the lead open again.

Another Cadet run soon followed that lead. Senior Hayden Suter took his team under his arms and tied the game up with 44 seconds left.

With the Tiger Cubs having the ball and under a minute left to go, they had one thing on their mind. They had to get the final shot and with no turnovers.

In Saturday's loss to Edgewood, Bollman had a chance to hold it for the final shot. He had the ball stolen and Edgewood hit a last second layup for the win.

Friday was different. Bollman still got the ball on the inbounds and he was not going to turn the ball over. Instead, he drove it down and passed to GHS sophomore Ryan Coble.

Coble then passed it back to Bollman, who tried getting a layup but was shut down.

What the Cascade defense forgot was Foxx was wide open for three. Bollman kicked it out and with a second and a half left, Foxx drained the dagger.

With nearly no time left, Cascade turned it over on an inbounds violation, handing GHS the 51-48 victory.

Greencastle beat the Cadet's zone and it made for a successful night.

Greenlee thought for the first part of the game they struggled. They took too many threes. As the game went on, they started driving and took command. Greenlee was pleased with how it went.

The Tiger Cubs' defense caused 14 turnovers.

Teamwork made the victorious shot happen for GHS. They had nine assists on the night and everyone stepped up to make big plays.

"(GHS) needs new guys to step up every night," Greenlee said, "Jonny Newgent played huge and certainly Foxx with that last second three."

Greencastle will try and further improve their record next Friday when they host archrival North Putnam (6-4 2-1 WCC).
